Chemical Engineers are trained to work in the Petroleum, Petrochemical, and Chemical industries. They work in Plant Operations, Plant Design, Sales, Management.
In other words their are lots of different careers for Chemical Engineers. At the present time Industry is not expanding very rapidly, at least in North America, so the market for Engineers is fairly slow. What it will be like in 4 years is anybody’s guess.
In my career as a Chemical Engineer I have worked in an inorganic chemical plant as a Process Engineer helping to solve Production problems, in an organic chemical plant as Plant Foreman where I managed the Production Unit and the Supervisors and Operators reported to me. Then I worked for an EPC ( Engineering, Procurement, Construction ) company where I did design for oil refineries and chemical plants. The next job was in a plastics production plant where I was responsible for the production from a Technical point of view, in other words I looked after the process part of the operation.
As you can see, their are many possible careers for Chemical Engineers and I have found it a very interesting and rewarding profession.
